Welcome to another installment of the Lazy Sundays series, where we take a look at the best automotive videos we came across during the week. We’ll start things of with footage of the ex-Alain Prost 1991 Ferrari 643 F1 car stretching its legs around Imola circuit. The 1991 season is probably a stage of Prost’s career that he would like to forget, with an unstable management structure at Ferrari hampering the development of the 643. He was very vocal about the car’s reliability and balance issues and, despite finishing 3rd in the Constructor’s Championship, the relationship between Prost and Ferrari was too strained, resulting in a very short lived stint as a Ferrari driver for Prost. Nevertheless, 26 years later, the wail of a classic Ferrari F1 V12 is something to treasure, especially now in the age of the turbo-V6.
Next we take a look at a lap of the Nurburgring 24hr Qualifying race, via an in-car view from the Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus SCG003C (I sympathize with the commentator who has to call that name for 24 hours). The story of the SCG003C is an interesting one, with film producer and car enthusiast James Glickenhaus – also known for his Ferrari P/45 by Pininfarina and P/45 Competizione one-off commissions – deciding to build his own race car and race team. The car looks like a prototype endurance racer, but has simpler underpinnings and powertrain akin to GT class racers. Its design will make it onto public roads as well, with the street variant SCG003 Stradale making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show this year. It will be interesting to see how the race car shown below will fare as a road car.
Next we have feature length footage from yet another Time Attack event. VIC time Attack is the newest Time Attack competition in Australia, held at the Philip Island Grand Prix Circuit. The event focuses more on the “street based” time attack cars, with the all out WTAC Pro level cars running in a Demo Class. It is a good opportunity for competitors to ready their cars for WTAC and many big guns made the trip to Victoria to participate.
Staying with Time Attack, here’s some footage of a rather impressive Subaru Impreza WRX STi from the Time Attack Italia Championships. The Italian Time Attack scene may not be as big as the UK but there are some very high level entrants, like this STi built by Tecnoracing Performance. This thing sounds as mean as it looks and has the pace to back up its presence. From the rear it reminds me a bit of the Tomei Cusco Impreza. I wonder how it would fare against the UK’s best.
We’ll end this Lazy Sunday with the Rampa da Falperra Hillclimb in Portugal, won by Simone Faggioli in his Norma M20FC prototype. The video below captures his drive up the hill and to call it fast would be an understatement. The speed at which he attacks the course is astonishing, driving at the absolute limit through corners as if they weren’t there. Enjoy 2:25 of man and machine in perfect sync.
